Spartan Heating, Cooling and Fireplaces recently performed some services for me at my home. I was very happy with their level of experience, friendliness, and the charges for the work they performed. Josh was easy to talk to, and even called after the work was completed to make sure that there were no issues and that I was happy with the jobs they performed for me. I highly recommend this company, and will be calling them for any future needs that I may have.

Furnace Not Working? Check These Things First

Not every furnace problem requires a major repair. If your furnace isn’t heating your home, there are a couple of simple things you can safely check before scheduling service:

Check your furnace filter

Make sure you have a clean, properly rated pleated filter and that it isn't excessively dirty or restricting airflow.

Check your thermostat batteries

If your thermostat uses batteries, weak or dead batteries may interfere with its operation.

If those simple checks don’t solve the problem, it’s better to have the system diagnosed than to start taking components apart or replacing parts yourself.

Common Furnace Problems We Repair

After years of working on heating systems in Eastern Iowa homes, there are a few furnace problems our team sees especially often.
No Heat in the House

If the temperature is dropping but your furnace isn’t producing heat at all, something in the system is preventing it from operating correctly. The cause can range from a relatively simple electrical issue to a failed furnace component. Instead of assuming which part is responsible, we work through the system to identify the actual source of the failure.

Furnace Is Making Unusual Noises

Banging, rattling, squealing, or other unfamiliar sounds can sometimes travel through your ductwork and be heard throughout the house. A new or persistent furnace noise is worth having checked. The sound itself can provide useful clues, but a technician still needs to inspect the system to determine what is causing it.

Furnace Fan Runs, but the Air Is Cold

Another problem we regularly encounter is a blower that continues running even though the burners aren't producing heat. You may hear the furnace operating and feel air coming from the vents, but the air is cool instead of warm. If your furnace is blowing cold air and your home isn't warming up, we can diagnose why the heating cycle isn't operating properly.

Should I Repair or Replace My Furnace?

A broken furnace doesn’t automatically mean you need a new one.

At Spartan, the final decision to repair or replace belongs to the homeowner. Our job is to give you the information you need to make that decision.

For furnaces under about 15 years old:

Repairing the existing equipment can often make sense, particularly when the problem is manageable and the rest of the system is in good condition. You may still have years of useful service left and can begin planning ahead for eventual replacement.

For furnaces over about 15 years old:
It’s worth looking more carefully at the repair cost, condition of the equipment, and availability of replacement parts. Furnace equipment often has a lifespan around 20 years, so an older system with an expensive repair may not provide a good return on that investment.
For major component failures:
A failed heat exchanger or another significant component can change the equation even if a repair is technically possible. Putting a large amount of money into aging equipment can leave you paying for additional failures later and still needing to replace the furnace.

We’ll explain what we see and make a recommendation when appropriate, but we won’t make the decision for you.

Why Choose Spartan for Furnace Repair?

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

We follow an established diagnostic progression rather than jumping straight to replacing a part.

Clear Answers Before Repairs

You'll know what we found, what we recommend, and what the repair is expected to cost before you authorize the work.

24/7 Emergency Furnace Repair

Heating problems don't always happen during business hours. Spartan offers 24/7 emergency repair service when you need help getting your heat back on.

Local, Veteran-Owned Company

Spartan is based in Cedar Rapids and serves homeowners throughout Eastern Iowa. We bring the honesty, reliability, and community-focused service you'd expect from a local, veteran-owned business.

How Spartan Diagnoses a Furnace Problem

Good furnace repair starts with figuring out why the furnace failed — not guessing which part needs to be replaced.

When a Spartan technician arrives, we’ll introduce ourselves and explain what we’re going to check. From there, we use what our team calls our progressions: an established sequence of diagnostic steps designed to help us inspect the system efficiently and work toward the source of the problem.

Once we’ve identified the issue, we explain: what is wrong with the furnace, what repair we recommend, what the repair is expected to cost, whether there are other options worth considering.

Our technicians can even look up replacement parts and current part pricing while we’re at your home when needed.

No repair is made until we’ve explained the problem and you’ve had the opportunity to decide how you want to proceed.

Get Your Heat Back On

Don’t spend a cold Iowa day wondering what’s wrong with your furnace. Spartan Heating, Cooling & Fireplaces will diagnose the problem, explain your options, and help you determine the right next step for your home.

Furnace Repair FAQs

How Much Does Furnace Repair Cost?

There isn't one responsible flat answer to what a furnace repair will cost because the underlying problems can be very different. Some repairs are relatively straightforward. We may find something such as a failed capacitor, fuse, or wiring issue. At the other end of the spectrum, a major component such as a heat exchanger can make the repair substantially more involved. That's why Spartan diagnoses the furnace first. Once we know what's actually wrong, we can explain the repair and provide pricing before moving forward.

Why is my furnace running but not producing heat?

If you hear the furnace or blower running but feel cool air from your vents, the blower may be operating without the burners producing heat. Several issues can cause this, so the furnace needs to be diagnosed to determine why the heating cycle isn't completing properly.

What should I check if my furnace suddenly stops working?

Start with two simple checks: inspect your furnace filter to make sure it's clean and properly rated, and check your thermostat batteries if your thermostat uses them. If you still have no heat, schedule professional furnace service rather than attempting to disassemble the system.

Should I turn my furnace off if I smell gas?

A gas smell should be treated as an urgent safety issue. Don't continue troubleshooting the furnace yourself. Leave the affected area and follow appropriate gas-emergency procedures before having the system inspected.

What should I do if my carbon monoxide detector goes off?

Treat a carbon monoxide alarm seriously. Don't enter a basement or furnace area to investigate the equipment yourself. Get to a safe location and follow the detector manufacturer's and local emergency guidance.

Is a 15-year-old furnace worth repairing?

Sometimes. Age alone doesn't determine whether a furnace should be replaced. For equipment approaching or exceeding 15 years, we consider the cost of the repair, the type of component that failed, the overall condition of the furnace, and whether replacement parts are readily available. A smaller repair may still make sense; an expensive major-component failure may make replacement the better long-term investment.
